The craft that made Emsdetten great
Long before the textile industry shaped Emsdetten, another craft was the economic basis for many families: tub-making. For centuries, flat baskets woven from willow were made here - the so-called Emsdetten tubs.
Today, the Tub-Making Museum commemorates this almost forgotten craft and impressively shows how closely work, family and everyday life were linked.

A craft with great significance for Emsdetten
The Emsdetten tub was an important tool in agriculture. It was used to separate the chaff and dust from the threshed grain. It was made entirely by hand and required numerous work steps - from cutting the willows to the finished wickerwork.
In its heyday around 1750, around half of all artisan households in Emsdetten lived directly or indirectly from tub-making. Every year, tens of thousands of tubs were produced and sold as far afield as the Netherlands.
Everyday life behind the workbenches
The combination of home and workshop is particularly impressive. Visitors can directly experience how closely work and family life used to be intertwined. The furnished rooms convey an authentic picture of the everyday life of the people who established Emsdetten's reputation far beyond the region with their craftsmanship.
