Experience the raised bog: Wild, pristine and unique

To the west of Emsdetten, the Emsdettener Venn is one of the most impressive nature reserves in the region - a fascinating habitat full of rare animal and plant species, mysterious moorland landscapes and impressive expanses.

Covering around 325 hectares, you will find the remains of what was once an extensive raised bog, which was the first nature reserve in the Steinfurt district to be placed under protection back in 1941. This makes the Emsdettener Venn one of the most important natural areas in the Münsterland region.

The moor has been used and altered by humans for centuries. Today, the focus is on the protection, renaturation and preservation of this sensitive ecosystem. Numerous endangered bog-typical plant and animal species find a valuable refuge here.

As you walk along the winding paths, you can feel the soft moorland under your feet, hear rare birdsong and experience the special atmosphere of this primeval landscape up close.

The Venn is also an excellent place to explore by bike: The circular route leads along farm tracks, paved cycle paths and natural routes around the core area of the moor.

Local environmental associations are actively involved in protecting the Emsdetten Venn and regularly offer guided tours where you can delve even deeper into the history, ecology and special features of this extraordinary area.

The Venn and meadow circuit

A classic among the Emsdetten walks: This varied circular tour takes you right through the idyllic fens and meadows of the Münsterland region. From the characteristic "Wanderpilz" parking lot, the route takes you through the Emsdettener Venn, one of the most important raised bog areas in the region.

Nine leisurely bike routes ranging from 25 to 40 kilometers wind through the Ems floodplains, peat bogs, forests, and hidden gems of the Münsterland region. The start and finish are at the Emsdetten train station—hop on your bike, take a deep breath, and just start pedaling!
